Temple-Veil Sarcophagus: Right end of the lid

5th-8th century
Stone
Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, Ravenna, Italy

The peacock has been a symbol of immortality since the time of the ancient Greeks, and grapes are a common symbol for peaceful abundance in both Christian and pagan funerary art (example). This kind of footed vase, known as a kantharos, is a common element in motifs of this type.
